The Indian River Astronomical Society (IRAS) was organized in June of 2002. The institutional sponsor of the Society is the Indian River Charter High School. In addition, the Society is a member of the Astronomical League, an international association of astronomical organizations, and enjoys those benefits.
The founders of the Society were Ken Macht and Richard Woodward, joined initially by Lou Aprile, Diane Kaser, and Dave Cenker. The current positions are Director, Diane Kaser; President,Ken Macht and Vice President,Terry Grage. Current membership numbers 25 and an informal email group numbers 38. Members range in age from grade school students to retirement age. Their background varies from novice to advanced amateur, and member’s equipment is also varied from binoculars and small refractor telescopes to mid-size 8"-10" reflectors and SCT’s to large up to 17.5" giant dobsonian-mount reflectors.
One of the stated purposes of the Society is education. The Society has been active in the community providing free viewing for the Indian River County school system and the public at large.
Astrophotography is a great interest to the Society and many of the members are actively using film cameras, CCD cameras, and video techniques to capture images of the heavens.

The Society meets monthly to discuss current events and issues of interest to members.
